Note MeI honestly wasn't really sure what to expect having a table at a convention. I barely had anything on hand. Cards I ordered were glossy fronts and backs making them extremely hard to work on. So I wasn't expecting much to happen. First day, however, I got a couple commissions in sketchbooks and a free pencil head shot in a big card (I was doing free penciled headshots in sketchbooks but only had the one bite). Not too bad I thought. Then off to the panel.
The panel went really well, I was a bit nervous at first but I was glad to see one of the artists

chad cicconi show up. Very personable fellow though I found out he was pretty nervous as well (couldn't tell from talking to him). Then , eventually

Jamie Snell showed as well. After a while I eased into it and enjoyed the discussion.
After the panel I was hungry (woke at 6:30 am, panel was done at roughly 2 and I hadn't eaten yet). I had to get back to my table though as I had a sketchbook someone dropped off and needed to be there so he could get it back. As I waited I had a few more people ask me for commissions. Eventually the man came back and got his sketchbook but my head was down full bore drawing. 3 hours later I had a break and ran for it. According to my friend there was, at one point, a crowd gathering round my table. I wouldn't know, I barely ever looked up. My final piece of the day was an awesome Thor I did for a cool guy. I felt so exhausted after all was said and done.
Day 2 I browsed around and eventually went to my table but no one really came up. Sundays are the same no matter what con I guess

I left 4 hours before close to get home.
What I learned:
The lighting is the worst, people walking around your table make the shadows jump everywhere. Had to keep crooking my neck.
The chairs will suck. Mine did. It was broke in the back so I had to sit on the tip.
It's real hard work when you get one thing after another and need to get them done in a timely manner while still having a quality product.
I love the conversations with people because I'm a fan too! Oh and thanks to his Tigra piece I found and talked to

for a bit. Daryl Manley of
[link] also stopped by as I was leaving.
------
After the next few commissions I'll be getting started on my comic. It's a superhero book and I'm committing to 4 issues for now. I'll shop it around but my intention was and will most likely be P.O.D. As well I am tossing the 21 hour comic into the mix at some point and considering continuing it as an online comic strip.

I never even been to a Con, comics or otherwise, at all. It's something I wanted to do for a while now, but just never was passionate enough, or just didn't have the money. NYCC is here every year but I just couldn't afford to attend when I wanted (past 3 years), let alone get a table. But hearing about the experience from an artist I know more/less fairly well is much better and gives me a better judgment than hearing about it from the big names out there.
One day, I'll share my con stories.

I'm always up for doing commissions. Big or small. Send me a note and we'll work something out!
