Spider-Man Archives and the future

Mon Nov 2, 2009, 6:57 PM
Well the Spider-Man Archives set is finally out and I must say it's looking good. It's funny though, at the time I thought "wow this is way better then the X-men cards, my best yet!" but now I look at what I can do and what I did and think "I really wish I could do some rework on some of these cards". That's just the nature of the beast. Always striving to do better. The set I am currently working on will be my best ever ;) I am also supposed to be working on a couple monsterwax card sets (can't wait!). The dream gig of doing mechs and a cartoon I liked as a kid, Voltron, doesn't seem to be bearing any fruit for me though :(

What's the next year have? A sketchbook (finally right?) and a comic, possibly two. I'll be trying to hit more conventions as an artist but am looking to hit a couple to get reviews and such. I was turned down for a table at C2E2 because I filed a wee bit too late. Other artists have mentioned the table price so I am kind of glad I did get the reject slip. Considering the New York Comicon.

Now for something that bugs me to no end. Etiquette. I'm not a big fan of crits anymore as I tend to notice more what I do wrong then others. What I don't notice is what I do right and I learned that after getting positive remarks and mentions about my work and what was liked. This works for me and I'm not saying it's the set in stone way everyone should follow. I do ask for crits when I hit problems I can't figure out. Key word ASK. If you come here to point out some fault on my stuff you perceive to be wrong and that's ALL you do, don't post here. I didn't ask for anyone to point out negatives here. If it bugs you, don't look. I don't do it to others, those with an ounce of respect for other artists don't do it. If your asked, fine. I'm asked for crits now and then and I give them otherwise I keep my mouth shut unless I like something a lot. No ego speaking here, I'm not the cat's meow but what I am is annoyed.

Ok, with that out of the way. I have to say thanks again for all the positive comments and the favorites I've gotten. I appreciate them all and barely forget a one. I get so busy I can't reply to everyone as much as I used to but I do read every comment so don't think I don't.

Stay positive and true and things will always work for you :) Take care all!

You're lucky. I was asked to do the x-men set because a vendor referred me. I haven't been asked to do any more card sets for rittenhouse. I think I'll try sending pics and requests to Upper Deck or Topps or somewhere else.... I've learned alot from other sites and people and from the x-men project. I want to keep doing more and keep getting better at art and working for these 'real' projects. I would love to know why I wasn't contacted for the Spiderman or any other set. I feel like I'm out of the loop or that I did something wrong, or that my art was not approved well enough for the concept of using me for other sets. Knowing is better than not knowing in this case, even if it is bad news.

I agree with the critique opinion. Ask to or say something constructive and not negative, along with positive or potential in the art. I haven't had anything or anyone bashing me or my artwork yet but I strive not to let criticism in positive form get me down and I strive to also keep being my own non-biased critic.

I wonder if the list for the next Marvel set is going to be added to? I hope I/we get accepted.

I've been working on the Marvel 70th cards. Doesn't mean they won't ask you again I jsut got lucky this time and got first wave of asking.

Just keep trying to improve constantly and you'll get to where you need to.

Also, I suggest you submit something to sadlittle.com Nathan is a very cool guy. Tell him George sent you :)

UD seems to be easy for people to get into (though I can't get into that company for some reason, argh) so look for Mark Irwin here on deviantart.

Topps only hires people through refferal now.

Don't forget sketch cards aren't the only way but just a means for freelance and that field is getting harder and harder to get into. You can also do comics on your own :) I'm trying to but sketch cards are killing me as far as time.

If you got any questions or need some advice feel free to ask.

I will. So you must be G. Calloway? (I hope I spelled it right). I like going through the other artist cards when I can. I love checking out the differences and variations in talent and ideas.

Thanks for the info too, I'll be checking up on that then, here and there. I usually keep pretty busy too. I decided to participate in NanoWrimo for my area this month.

I was told UD seems to take 'anyone' aka they do not seem picky. Weird they didn't contact you though, perhaps it's best if you are busy w/many other card projects. I guess I was looking forward to a possible email from kohlbus instead of immediately branching out. I need to get back to drawing more now. I do not normally rake through forum posts and websites but lately I have been here and there for info and it takes soooo much time!

I've wanted to do comics and such for my own work. I've had ideas but never thought I had the 'means' to put them into action. I have a better perspective thanks to a lot of people on deviant art, scoundrel, and those I have in my life.

If it's ok, I'll let you know if anything new comes my way? After finding out about the new Marvel project, I was a little nervous about getting asked for it. I would say yes of course haha, but I didn't know what was expected and what I could produce for a project like this. I feel I don't have enough of the experience to pump out what is expected. Anyway, it wouldn't keep me from drawing on the dang little cards haha.

Thanks again, ttyl.

I'm G. Calloway somewhere? weird but yeah that'd be me. Geo for short.

If you look through my deviations you'll see a major change from the beginning to now. Sketch cards have helped me grasp my compositions a bit better. If you ever have time I'll tell you one day how I got into this mess and back into art.

I haven't gotten the comic work done that I want done yet (and I hope I can get something before the new chicago show)but I'll get there. Everything in it's own time right? :)

Sure I'd love to hear it, just drop me a note. Yes there is a list of the artists on a sticky for the Marvel 70th anniversary set. I think your name is one of the first :) congrats again! I agree too, the card set I did helped me improve and not only from drawing the set, but seeing what others have done too.
